INKTOBER 2024 Day #24: EXPEDITION.
“This prompt made me think of Calvin and Hobbes adventuring through the woods, so I had to pay homage to the great Bill Watterson once again. There are so many things I love about ‘Calvin and Hobbes’, so many things that resonate with me. Beyond the superficiality (I don’t at all mean that in a negative sense) of the always gorgeous art style of Bill Watterson, there’s the life, adventures, personalities, and insights of the characters themselves. Watterson captured what it’s like to be a creative kid with an overactive imagination and lust for adventure, which is something I definitely relate to (even if too many of my adventures only took place in my head because I lacked the confidence needed for the more realistic escapades that didn’t involve magic, superpowers, or a lightsaber). Calvin and Hobbes could often be found exploring the wilderness while having fun. A simple walk through the woods with a few basic supplies a kid could put together (like snacks, a backpack, a hat, and a hand drawn map) turned into an expedition when a little imagination was added. Even a simple stick could be a walking stick, a staff, or a sword, which automatically makes things cooler. I still strive to have that feeling whenever I go on hikes or campouts. I like gathering up my essentials and being prepared for any eventuality. I know when I go on a day hike of 12 miles or less in the mountains that I’m not on a multi-day trek, but pretending I am adds to the fun sometimes. We don’t always get to control everything that happens in our lives, but we do get to control how we respond. We might as well lean into our imaginations and turn the mundane or challenging into epic adventures and expeditions to keep life fun.”
