INKTOBER 52 2024 Week #32: FANG.
“Alright, who knows this character? I think I first learned about Fin Fang Foom from an edition of the ‘Overstreet Comic Book Buyer’s Guide’, which I used to get to keep track of the value of all the comics I collected when I was in my teens in the 90s. They were dense volumes with listings for every comic title ever published, and it was updated annually with the previous year’s publishings and current values. Sprinkled throughout the text were the occasional black and white reprints of covers and artwork (I seem to recall a special section that had glossy color printings, too). One of the first volumes I owned had an early appearance of this weird, semi-humanoid looking dragon guy. I was surprised to see it was a Marvel comic. At that early stage of my collecting, I didn’t really realize that there was anything other than superhero comics (and maybe some old horror comics prior to that whole censorship thing), and to be fair I wasn’t interested in anything else at that time anyway. I can’t say I know anything about the character other than what I looked up while illustrating this, but now that I’m older and my interests have broadened, I admit to being curious. Although he has some historical significance simply because he was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the pre-superhero Marvel days, he’s certainly still not a top-tier character that will ever likely get his own movie, but you never know. I know at this point he has shown up in the Marvel superhero universe here and there, including ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Hulk’, and has been at least referenced in the MCU, according to the internet.
Anyway, he was fun to draw and I’m happy I stumbled onto this idea for this prompt.”
