INKTOBER 2022 Day #8: MATCH.

This was the first interpretation of the prompt that popped into my Brain when I saw it: a fight of some kind. At first I was thinking a wrestling match, and was envisioning PMD as the Ultimate Plunger or Ultimate Monkey (I watched wrestling in the 80s a lot and was a big fan of the Ultimate Warrior), complete with face paint and arm tassels. I thought about him wrestling a squid, but that got really convoluted in my mind (though I may revisit it at some point in the future because it’s a fun idea). Then I thought, instead of a squid, maybe he could be wrestling King from my favorite fighting game franchise Tekken. Then I thought, if he’s fighting someone in Tekken, I shouldn’t mix references and I should commit to it.

I’ve been a Tekken fan since playing it in the campus arcade in college with one of my best friends. We logged many hours both there and on his Playstation duking it out. One of my favorite characters early on was the Bruce Lee clone Marshall Law. He had a very powerful move that was tough to block and you could build combinations off of. I don’t remember what it was called specifically, but it’s basically a somersault kick, which is the move PMD is delivering to Marshall Law. In the history of Tekken, there have been many non-human characters (Kuma, Panda, Roger, Gon…)…maybe one day PMD will show up. That would be a dream come true.

This was a fun illustration, though I wish I had had the foresight to use a smaller tipped pen for the hatching on Marshall Law’s torso.
