INKTOBER 2023 Day #20: FROST(Y).
“Everybody now! ‘There must have been some magic in that plunger hat they found, for when they placed it on his head, he began to dance around…’
All the classic holiday cartoons have a special place in my heart. They represent a magical time of my youth, as they do for so many. Sitting on the couch or floor with my siblings and parents, waiting for that spinning ‘special’ graphic to pop up indicating the start of something, well, special. They were the harbingers of impending celebrations with family in the near future, but having cartoons on at night was itself a special event and just plain exciting. ‘Kids shows’ only happened early in the morning and just after school. Nighttime was for ‘grown up shows’. In this day of streaming tv and having access to content basically on demand whenever one wants it, I suppose that holiday cartoons at night aren’t all that unique or special anymore. Heck, there have been regular prime time cartoons on network and cable tv for decades now, year-round. It’s no longer an event that signals those childhood magical times of year. I wonder how familiar the current generations are with these classics. I know my wife and I tried to expose our kids to them, but it was through DVDs, certainly around the appropriate holidays, but also whenever they asked. I think that probably diminishes the experience somewhat, because one doesn’t have to be in the right place, at the right time, once a year anymore. I wonder how long before all these holiday shows are no longer part of the shared cultural experience, if they haven’t already stopped.
Or maybe I’m just old and being nostalgic for the ‘good old days’. Get off my lawn.”
