INKTOBER 2024 Day #10: NOMADIC.
“When in doubt, go ‘Star Wars’. This is another prompt that I had a completely different idea to start with. I was going to have PMD dressed in traditional Mongolian garb stepping out of a yurt. I’ve always wanted to set a yurt up somewhere, maybe turn it into a studio or use it as a campsite in the nearly 10-acre woods on our property. I’m also really enamored with the functionality and aesthetics of Mongolian ‘fashion’, and I have drawn a lot of inspiration from it for some of the wool coats I’ve made. A nomadic lifestyle has also held a lot of appeal to me. It forces you to only have what you absolutely need, and I have long felt that material possessions control and tether us, not that I could sever that tie at this point. It’s one of the reasons I enjoy camping so much and have since a young age. You pack up all your necessities and carry them with you, set up a temporary home, then move on. It’s simple. Peaceful. Calming. Free.
Anyway, I just wasn’t feeling the image I had come up with, and I mentioned it to my wife. She immediately jumped to ‘Star Wars’ and Obi Wan in the desert, watching over Luke in ‘A New Hope’ (her favorite version of Obi Wan is Alec Guiness, by the way), but he was a hermit, not a nomad. After she went to bed, I headed to my studio, sat down, and remembered ‘hey wait, Jawas were nomadic!’, and here we are. I love everything about ‘Star Wars’, and the mysterious Jawas are no exception. I loved the action figure in part because it was a different size than the other characters, and I loved all their bandoliers. It always seemed like such a cool and efficient way to carry your stuff, and it’s perhaps at least partially why I have sewn a few bandoliers to carry my essentials with me.”
