INKTOBER 2024 Day #13: HORIZON.

“For those lacking in astronomical knowledge, which truthfully includes me most of the time, this is an ‘event horizon’. Sort of. I think. It’s the theoretical boundary around a black hole beyond which no light or radiation can escape. I’ve seen artist depictions of a black hole/event horizon/singularity that look like this, thought it looked cool, and went with it.
I’ve always had a sense of awe and wonder for space. Perhaps it was spending summer nights at a little beach in Rhode Island with vast open skies and very little light pollution, being able to look straight up on a clear night to see uncountable stars, galaxies, the Milky Way. Maybe it was being raised on ‘Star Wars’. There is so much mystery out there, it’s fertile ground for an imaginative, creative mind to contemplate and dream. Is there life elsewhere in the universe? Statistically, I think it’s a pretty safe bet. Are there civilizations out there, or some form of higher intelligence? I like to think so, I like to hope that there is. The possibilities are mind boggling, and great fuel for art of all kinds. I find that the ‘cosmic perspective’, as Dr. Tyson is known for saying, is a really good way to approach life. It’s about seeing beyond our current circumstances, challenges, wants, and needs to see a bigger picture and to realize a lot of what we worry about is often insignificant. It’s also about appreciating the physics that shape everything, marveling at the way everything is connected, knowing that we are all made from the same stuff as the stars we look at on a clear night.”
