INKTOBER 2024 Day #16: GRUNGY.

“I will happily label myself a ‘metal head’ as far as my favorite musical genre is concerned but having been in high school and college in the 90s, a fair amount of ‘grunge music’ makes up the ‘soundtrack to my life’. I probably incorrectly lump the grunge bands that I like in with metal, though, because they sounded more like metal to me than what I understood grunge to be. Both were played side by side on the hard rock/metal radio station I used to listen to as well. I remember some of the older metal fans I knew at the time viewed grunge with disdain, and some even accused it of ‘killing’ metal (but we all know that it didn’t, because Jack Black has told us so). When I listen to music, I don’t really distinguish between the two genres, it’s just music that sounds good to me and usually makes me want to get up and workout and move and stuff. I guess if I stop to think about it, there are some delineations to be made within grunge, though. A band like Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots has a very different sound than Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Alice in Chains, but they’re all considered grunge. At the end of the day, it either sounds good to me or it doesn’t.
Jeans. There was a very brief period of time, mostly freshman year of high school when I was temporarily determined to fit in and not be a target of bullying anymore, that I wore jeans. Less than halfway through sophomore year, though, I started wearing shorts year-round and I haven’t stopped. I wore them on a particularly cold day in October or November, and one of my friends accused me of being nuts. He bet me $5 I couldn’t wear shorts everyday until winter break. I did, he never paid me, I kept wearing shorts. I only wear pants for specific reasons: 1. Karate, 2. Snowboarding (and sometimes winter camping), 3. Doing house projects or yardwork in which having exposed legs would be dangerous, and 4. Weddings and funerals. Otherwise, I’m in shorts. Gotta be able to kick bad guys in the head when the need arises.”
