INKTOBER 2024 Day #22: CAMP.

“I love hammock camping (and camping in general). I don’t mind sleeping on the ground, either in or out of a tent, but gently swaying between two trees is just such a different experience. I also like that it can be a much more compact set up to carry around (with the biggest component being some sort of tarp). It does have its drawbacks, like wind exposure, but I’ve hammock camped in the dead of winter in temperatures below zero (Fahrenheit) with even colder wind-chill and been fine. It all comes down to preparation. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad planning. The biggest problem for me with a hammock is that all my cold weather gear is made of wool these days (like the coats I make). The multiple layers I use when it gets really cold get kind of bulky and makes just getting into my hammock a hassle sometimes.
The older I have gotten, the more difficult it is to remember to make the opportunities to go camping, even if it’s just out in my back yard. I spent a lot of time outdoors growing up, especially in the summers. But it wasn’t until I camped out for the first time as a Boy Scout that I knew how important it was to sleep outside for me. Even if I wake up a lot during the night to readjust something to stay warm or to shift positions (or to check on scouts during my tenure as a scoutmaster), I still feel more rested than having the same amount of sleep indoors. I just feel better, especially if I battled the cold. For many years I have made it a point to sleep outside on the coldest night of the year. Some think it’s crazy, but I think it’s fun.”
