INKTOBER 2024 Day #23: RUST

“To say I went out on a limb on this one might be an understatement. Most likely the only people who will get this are fans of 90s grunge music pioneers Soundgarden. Basically, the only thing my Brain did when I read the prompt ‘rust’ was to play the song ‘Rusty Cage’ over and over again. To be fair, I still listen to Soundgarden and that song but thinking nothing but ‘I’m gonna break my rustyyyyy caaaage…and ru-uunnn” on repeat got a little old while working on this.

On a technical note, figuring out how to give some character and life to a busted cage was interesting. Tedious, but ultimately, I think kind of fun. Trying to decide how to illustrate a rust texture was challenging, and something I should probably spend more time thinking about, just in case I have to draw rust again for some reason. When I thumbnailed this idea out, I congratulated myself a little bit because I thought I composed an image that I could draw relatively quickly, and thus make up some ground on how far behind on Inktober I knew I was going to be by this point. Yeah, my self-congratulations was very premature. It might look simple with not a lot of stuff going on, but that cage took forever.”
