INKTOBER 2024 Day #25: SCARECROW.
“I probably find this funnier than I should. I’ve mentioned before that I’m somehow related to the actress that played the Wicked Witch of the West, which is an interesting bit of family trivia, but I didn’t know that when I was a kid and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ came on tv every year (you know, back when stuff was on when it was on and if you missed it, too bad). I don’t remember what time of year it happened (was it around Easter? I don’t know why that would be, but that’s when I think it was), but I remember it was a big, annual event in our household. At least, it seemed that way to pre-teen me. We got to stay up late watching and my older sister and I (I don’t remember if we were still doing it by the time my younger brother was born and would have been old enough to participate) would eat popcorn and drink soda from matching cup and bowl sets with feet and little faces on them.
Remembering those special nights watching ‘The Wizard of Oz’ got me thinking about a lot of the other special tv moments from my childhood that my kids have never experienced because the world and technology are different. Don’t get me wrong, I love having shows and movies on demand through streaming services, but there’s that little bit of magic that is gone when you had to wait for a certain time of year (or even just a certain time of day or day of the week like early Saturday morning cartoons) for a show. It was an event. I remember how exciting it was when cartoons would be on tv during primetime hours at night (before ‘The Simpsons’ was a thing), that spinning ‘Special” logo (I assume it was unique to one of the networks, but I’m not positive, nor do I know which one it would be) and the accompanying music that signaled some classic holiday cartoon or show that we only watched that one time of year, every year. Those shows heralded the holiday season and spending time with family to me. I was aware, even back then, that I was a lucky kid with a great family and a fairly idyllic childhood. Lots of little memories jogged just from drawing the Scarecrow.”
