INKTOBER 2024 Day #29: NAVIGATOR.

“This marks the second time I’ve referenced Disney’s ‘Flight of the Navigator’ for an Inktober prompt (the first time was during Inktober 52 for the prompt ‘flight’. Maybe the next one will be ‘of the’…). It’s one of those things that’s part of my Brain gumbo that is the source of my creativity. It’s not a huge part like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Calvin and Hobbes’, ‘The X-Men’, ‘Transformers’, etc., but it is definitely in there. It was a fun and novel story with some pretty stunning visuals. It’s also notable for being one of the first Hollywood films to use CGI. I think CGI is great and all, it definitely has its uses, and there are some amazing artists working in that field, but there’s just something magical about practical effects that I love. I can’t help but think if ‘Flight of the Navigator’ were made today (or ‘rebooted’…which I hope doesn’t happen) all of the practical effects would be replaced with CGI. That would be a travesty in my opinion. Having Max, the amnesiac wacky robotic alien ship, be a physical thing is so much more impactful. CGI definitely has its place and can be amazing, but I’ll always have a soft spot for well-made practical effects, props, puppets and the like.”
