INKTOBER 2024 Day #30: VIOLIN.
“Although I classify myself as a ‘metal head’, I do have great appreciation for classical music and instruments, especially violins and cellos. I’m not musically intelligent enough to put words to why, I just like the sounds they make. I’ve heard classically trained musicians say before that had such and such classical composer from centuries ago been alive today, they would have been making heavy metal music. I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but there’s certainly plenty of modern metal bands that have not only expressed appreciation for classical music but also have released whole albums of their metal music performed with and by orchestras. There also have been a few acts that started as classically trained musicians such as cellists who have deviated into covering hard rock and heavy metal songs, and I have to say, it sounds amazing. I think the duo ‘2 Cellos’ may have been one of the first (at least to have reached any notoriety) and they are excellent. We took my parents and our kids to see them live and it was fantastic. We were also fortunate enough to go see John Williams perform some of his most iconic pieces before retiring. That was an incredible experience.
I myself have never learned to play an instrument, though I’ve always intended to. I’ve kind of grown up musically adjacent, if that makes any sense. I have a lot of family that sang, played instruments, were in bands, etc. My grandparents, parents, some cousins, aunts and uncles, and my eldest son are all musically inclined. My son plays multiple instruments, and I have a cousin that’s an impressive concert cellist. If musical aptitude is genetic, I guess it either skipped me or was all converted into drawing and daydreaming.”
