INKTOBER 2024 Day #6: TREK.
“I do believe this is the first ‘Star Trek’ reference I’ve made, but I’m also not a huge Trekkie. As I’ve mentioned over and over again, ‘Star Wars’ is my thing, always has been. I do like science fiction, but I tend to gravitate towards the fantastical elements of things like lightsabers and The Force, the varied alien species and the lore and whatnot. My younger brother was a ‘Star Trek’ fan, predominantly ‘The Next Generation’, so I wound up watching a fair amount of that with him over the years, as well as some of ‘Deep Space Nine’ and some ‘Voyager’. I watched enough at least that I still regularly quote Captain Picard’s ‘make it so, number one’ line on a semi-regular basis (which may now become ‘make it so, number squid’ for me). Then again, it’s become part of meme-culture, so that’s probably not saying much. I know it’s inspired countless people to pursue careers in the sciences like astrophysics, aerospace engineering, which is pretty cool and winds up benefiting all of humanity. I also appreciate the utopian outlook for the future, using fiction to give us a glimpse of what we could have, what we could be. Every incarnation of the show since the original, in addition to inspiring hope, has tackled some controversial (for their time) subjects, whether it was Captain Kirk sharing the first televised interracial kiss or some of the later series’ taking on society’s views on sexuality and gender. Art has the power to connect people, to engender empathy and compassion by revealing life lived through another’s eyes, and I think that’s one of the major themes running through the ‘Star Trek’ franchise. I appreciate what ‘Star Trek’ is and its impact on society and culture, even if it didn’t quite capture my imagination and attention like ‘Star Wars’.”
