INKTOBER 52 2024 Week #29: HELLBOY.

“With a prompt this specific, it was kind of hard to do anything that wasn’t equally specific. I’m not sure when I first heard about ‘Hellboy’, but it was probably not long after it was first published, as I was actively collecting comics and reading ‘The Comic Buyer’s Guide’ and ‘Wizard: The Guide to Comics’ regularly and therefore much more keyed into what was going on in the comics world. I’m not super familiar with it, though. Creator Mike Mignola has a very unique, bold, graphic art style that just never spoke to me back then. I was much more inspired by the more detailed work of Jim Lee and traditional superhero comics (exclusively Marvel) and manga. I have a much greater appreciation for his style now, however. My only real familiarity with ‘Hellboy’ comes from the movies starring Ron Perlman. I don’t know how comics accurate they were, but they were entertaining to watch and the special effects make up was amazing. Now that I’m older and have a much greater appreciation for and interest in comics genres other than superheroes in tights, I definitely have ‘Hellboy’ on my reading list.”
