TOBY’S BRAIN: The Words (blog)

Gallery Update: Shades of Black and White

As I've mentioned before, I'm working on, like, 32 things right now (one of which is that 10 Things children's book, which is thankfully not 32 Things). I have lots of stuff floating around in my brain that I need to get out. But, when a dear friend contacts me and wants to do a small collaboration, I can't say no. Trying to emulate Sin City... One of my best friends, Bill Gauthier, is an uber talented author (when he's not engaged in his day job of teaching or tied up being a husband and father) who I've

Gallery Update: Look! Up in the sky! It’s…whales?!

Some back pain flare ups and my eternal struggle with getting computers to like me kept me from making this post last week, so the regularly scheduled Monday Studio Stuff post will happen some other time, hopefully this week. But for now, a little blast from my past... Look, flying whales! Nobody's ever drawn THAT before... First off, after a little digging, I've discovered this photo is the only copy I have of this image in color. This was another example of my early dabbling with incorporating digital into my workflow by scanning a pencil image and attempting

Studio Stuff/Influences: Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind

For this Monday's Studio Stuff, I thought I'd showcase another creator whose work continues to influence me. As I've mentioned before, I have tons of influences artistically, and I'm not writing about them in any particular order. I'm basically following what my mood dictates and what I happen to glance at on my shelves when I'm planning a post. These posts also aren't meant to be reviews or synopses, I'm just going to talk about my connection to the work or the creator and how it has affected me. (And yes, I know I can find better pictures online that

Gallery Update: Some old “Wilhelm” Concept Art

Prior to my wife lovingly strong-arming me into the digital art world, I had been tentatively dipping my toes into those waters for several years. Like many, I had started out by doing traditional graphite or charcoal drawings and then scanning them and trying to color them digitally. This process was clunky for a lot of reasons, but a major road block for me had been trying to do all that Photoshop coloring and whatnot with a mouse rather than a stylus. At one point I tried to incorporate another traditional aspect one of my college professors, illustrator and teacher

Studio Stuff: Mr. Handface

Mr. Handface resting at home amongst friends. It appears that Monday is becoming Studio Stuff Day. At least for now. I'm still getting my blog legs under me (betcha didn't know blogs had legs, didja?), but I'm trying to find some level of consistency that doesn't interfere too much with, you know, actually being productive in my studio. Anywho, today's entry is: Mr. Handface. At least, that's what I call him right now. Everything is subject to change in Toby's Brain. Mr. Handface is actually just a cool, quirky "ring"/pair of googly eyes. See? They were

Sketchbook: Revery concept sketches

While I've been working on several other projects, trying to get this site up and going, trying to get the Etsy shop started, and other "stuff", I've had my in-the-works graphic novel Revery on my mind. A lot. I'm itching to get back to work on it, and maybe, I dunno, finish it. I have more ideas for that world that I want to eventually get to, but I have to finish volume 1 first. I had pretty much figured I was done writing and thumbnailing it, but last night, on our way over to our local mountain for some
